trilogy release
the first phoenix wright game is surprisingly solid for a
first go of things. it's an extremely solid game
narratively, and while it may be rough around the edges at
times, it crafts an engaging story nonetheless.
as a visual novel, the gameplay isn't anything shocking.
there's two different "phases" of the game: investigations
and trials. investigations are simple: it's a lot of
travelling to new locations, collecting evidence and talking
to witnesses. trials are more focused, as you break down
witness testimony with evidence.
i'm not huge on the investigations. they're a little too
simple in this game, and it ends up being a lot of
travelling for very little information most of the time.
trials, on the other hand, are an absolute blast; perfectly
tense, often with the most poignant character interactions
and emotional moments.
speaking of those characters, they're all excellent here.
the main trio of phoenix, maya and edgeworth all have
distinct and interesting personalities, and they play off
each other in really fun ways. phoenix and maya bicker a
little in fun ways, but care about each other on a deep,
personal level. phoenix and edgeworth are both passionate
about their craft, but share vastly different ideologies and
pasts, and the game follows how both of their moral
compasses change.
